LitFriends: Our Choices Shape Who Gets Power

“Culture is the arts elevated to a set of beliefs.” — Thomas Wolfe

Something recently surprised me.

In all the time I’ve been sharing books through LitFriends, blog posts, and social media, only one person has used my independent bookstore link.

One.

Most people appear to default to Amazon. And I stopped pushing links that no one had clicked on.

I understand why. Convenience matters. I use Amazon myself when I can't buy from a local or small business.

But all our everyday choices are shaping big power.

It's time to consider what we can do with the choices we still have.

So I'd love your input.

1. Reader Choice

Newsletter subscribers received this as a poll. If you're reading the web version, I'd love to hear your answer in the comments.

When I recommend books, what options would you like me to provide?

🌿 A. Amazon is easiest for me.

🌿 B. I prefer Bookshop.org and independent bookstore links.

🌿 C. I'd like a Barnes & Noble option.

🌿 D. Please give me all three whenever possible.

Which option would you choose? Tell me in the comments.

The Alchemy of Sass Update

I'm expecting to receive The Alchemy of Sass back from the proofreader this week and, if all goes according to plan, return the revised manuscript to the publisher by week's end.

That means I'm about to spend several days immersed in the book one more time before it moves into the next phase of production. The cover design is also underway, and I'll be excited to share both the cover and publication updates as they become available.

2. A Fitzgerald Craft Lesson

Writing instruction often emphasizes the fully dramatized scene: action, dialogue, tension, and change unfolding in real time. But the suggestion of a scene is another craft move every narrative writer needs.

In the new article, I use a brief passage from F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby to show how a few carefully chosen details can create movement, atmosphere, memory, and meaning without slowing the story down.

If you write fiction, memoir, personal essay, or other forms of narrative nonfiction, this is a technique worth adding to your craft toolbox.

3. A Great Big Memoir Opportunity

For memoir writers serious about starting, completing, and connecting with their future readers:

This summer, I'm considering a small Launch Partner Cohort inside the Complete Memoir Program. This selective opportunity would be for writers who want focused memoir guidance, need a substantial tuition discount, and are excited to help launch The Alchemy of Sass while learning how to build a reader-writer community for their own future books.
